The family of the Kenyan athlete will now end their two-month ordeal having struggled to return the remains of their kin home for burial since his tragic death in Mexico last December.

The body of retired Kenyan athlete Josephat Kibet Ngetich, who died in Mexico while trying to rescue an employer’s dog, has finally been returned to the country.

Ngetich drowned in December last year when he tried to rescue an employer’s dog that had plunged into a dam head-fast but his family had been unable to raise enough money to return his body home for burial.

The family of the athlete, who hails from Bomet county, needed Ksh3 million to repatriate his body but the figure proved difficult until the government and well-wishers stepped in.

Ngetich’s body arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Friday and was received by family and friends.

“Sadly, we are receiving my son in a coffin yet he left the country healthy with the hopes that he would turn around the fortunes of the family. I am grateful for the support we have received from all well-wishers,” Ngetich’s mother Pauline Nowa told Nation.

Her sentiments were echoed by the deceased’s window Janet Ngetich.

“We will forever be grateful to the Kenyan and Mexican authorities for the support they have given us,” she said.

Ngetich, who retired from athletes in 2006 after suffering a knee injury, had been away in Mexico for the last 17 years and could not travel back home after he reportedly lost his travel documents.

He took part in a number of middle and long-distance races in South America, winning a number of them.

Ngetich claimed victories in the Saltillo Coahuila half marathon in 2005 and 2006, won the 2006 Monterrey half marathon as well as the 2008 Belo Horizonte 10km race among others.
