The Uasin Gishu County Government had confirmed to fully support the Eldoret City Marathon organisers but they unfortunately withdrew leaving the organisers in jeopardy.

With just two days to the much-anticipated Eldoret City Marathon, Race Director Moses Tanui has yet again announced the postponement of the event.

The race was initially scheduled for April but it was pushed to June. It was, later on, pushed to Saturday, October 1 and now the race has been postponed indefinitely.

In a press release, the veteran athlete expressed regret about having to postpone the event. It was noted that they were ready to host the event this weekend but unfortunately, things did not go as planned.

“The decision has not been made lightly, and I want to express our profound regret that we find ourselves in this unfortunate situation.

"As many of you have been aware, we have been diligently working towards organising an exceptional marathon event that would showcase the extraordinary talent and determination of our athletes,” a part of the statement read.

The two-time Boston Marathon champion noted that they have experienced delays in the arrival of the running merchandise that was being shipped from Dubai and was expected to have arrived in the country on Monday.

He also added that the Uasin Gishu County Government withdrew from sponsoring the race, a move that affected them heavily.

“We scouted for new title sponsors and unfortunately there has been a delay in the completion of the transaction to deposit the prize money required to ensure that the race meets the high standards that both our athletes and fans rightfully expect,” the statement added.

Tanui added that the postponement of the marathon is for a good course for the athletes and he added that they remain committed to the athletes who had already confirmed participation.
