Jamaican sprinter Kishane Thompson’s injuries were overcome with help from Coach Stephen Francis and innovative Aussie recovery technology.

Olympic 100m silver medallist Kishane Thompson has been candid about his battle with injuries but a cutting-edge Australian invention played a pivotal role in his triumphant journey to the podium at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Solushin, a revolutionary treatment device for shin splints developed by Sydney-based sports medicine startup Ossyx, became a game-changer for the Jamaican sprinter in the months leading up to the Games.

Shin splints, a notoriously stubborn injury for runners, had plagued Thompson’s career, sidelining him from key competitions and stifling his potential on the world stage.

However, when his coach, Jamaican Olympic sprint mastermind Stephen Francis, approached Ossyx in early 2024, the team provided a solution that proved transformative.

“Widely described by runners as a frustrating injury that is difficult to treat, the Solushin is clinically proven to help users return to pain-free running up to 75 days faster than traditional rest-and-ice methods and increases ankle range of motion by 23% in just one hour,” said Dr. William McNamara, medical doctor and Clinical Lead and Co-founder of Ossyx as per Runners Tribe.

Thompson’s journey to silver in Paris was marked by perseverance and innovative recovery methods.

After years of setbacks, including hamstring issues and the global disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic, his coach credited the Solushin as a crucial factor in overcoming the shin splints that had held him back.

Thompson first began using the device in early 2024 after his coach learned about its patented Counter-Traction Technology.

The Solushin, which had already been successfully used by over 1,300 athletes globally, provided relief and enhanced Thompson’s recovery process in the critical months leading to the Olympics.

“Shin splints can affect all of us, from everyday runners to the world’s best. We are thrilled that our homegrown Aussie recovery technology, the Solushin, played a role in Kishane’s Olympic journey,” said Ben, CEO and Co-founder of Ossyx.

“Being featured on Sprint was an unexpected surprise, and our entire team is deeply grateful to Kishane and his coaches for ensuring we were highlighted.”

After clocking a world-leading time of 9.77 seconds to win the Jamaican Olympic trials, he dominated at the Gyulai István Memorial in Hungary.

However, none of this would have been possible without a robust recovery strategy that addressed his long-standing issues.

World Athletics reports detailed Thompson’s challenges in previous years, highlighting his limited appearances at major events due to injuries.

From missing the 2022 World Championships in Eugene to pulling out of the Jamaican trials in 2023, Thompson’s road to Paris was far from smooth.

Yet the introduction of the Solushin enabled him to build momentum during the 2024 season, culminating in his podium finish in the men’s 100m final.

“Shin splints are a problem that can derail any athlete, and they’ve been a huge hurdle in Kishane’s career,” said Dr. McNamara.

“Seeing him win silver in Paris and knowing that the Solushin helped get him there—it’s incredibly rewarding.”

Thompson’s silver medal achieved in a closely contested race marked a breakthrough moment not just for the athlete but also for Ossyx, whose innovative device proved its worth on the world stage.
