Beatrice Chebet already has two world records under her belt but is hungry for a third in the event she has desribed as the most "competitive".

Double Paris Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet has  revealed how she is going to restrategise in order to eventually smash the 5000-meter world record eventually.

Chebet has had an incredible year. Aside from winning gold medals in both the 5000 and the 10000 meters at the Paris Olympic games, she smashed the world record in the latter in Eugene, Oregon USA in May, running 28:54.14 .

At the beginning of the season, smashed the world record in the 5 kilometer road race in Barcelona at 14.13. The only elusive record remaining is the 5000 meters which is held by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay at 14:00.21.

Chebet intended to smash the record at the Zurich Diamond League last week even under rainy conditions, but fell nine seconds short.

As she targets to one day add that string to her bow, she has revealed three things that motivate her to achieve her targets, including a strong mindset.

“I always motivate myself and say ‘I can do it’. If someone else can do it, why not me?” Chebet asked in an interview with FloTrack.

“My family and coach have supported me throughout my journey. My discipline helps as well. I put my training first before everything else and focus on what I want to achieve..

“I knew the world record was not easy to break. 14.00.00 is not easy but I said ‘let me try’. It is better to try than fail to do it. I said I would try to get it but if I failed, I would come again next year and try smash it again.”

Chebet has also opened up about the season that has been for her, which has seen her set unprecedented history.

The 24-year old has admitted that it was never her intention to win the gold medals, but actually to just medal given the strong nature of the field at the Olympics especially in the 5000 meters that included Tsegay as well as the iconic Faith Kipyegon.

“Preparations for the Olympics started after I won the cross country. My target was to try and and just win a medal at the Olympics.

“I had never won a gold medal before in track, so my mindset was ‘ If everything goes well, I wanna go home with a gold medal if everything goes well (as a bonus)'.

“Training was not easy but I kept reassuring myself that I could make it, so after running the 5000 and win the gold medal, I told myself, ‘If I won in the 5000, the competitive race, why not in the 10, 0000?”

"I told myself I had to do it.”
