Beatrice Chebet will be out to impress fans on New Year's Eve in a high profile event in Barcelona.

Double Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet will be seeking title defence in the 5km at the Cursa dels Nassos set for December 31 in Barcelona.

The 10,000m world record holder set a world record at the previous edition of the event, clocking a stunning 14:13 minutes to win the race and she will be out to attempt breaking the record as she eyes another victory.

Ethiopia’s Senbere Teferi had set the previous record of 14:29 minutes back in 2021 before Chebet shattered it last year. On her way to Barcelona, Beatrice Chebet hopes to end her successful season on a high.

However, Chebet will not have an easy run since she will be up against young talent from Ethiopia who will be looking to dethrone the track and road running queen.

Reigning world under-20 5000m champion Medina Eisa and the African Games bronze medallist Melknat Wudu will be out to challenge Chebet for the coveted throne.

Eisa and Chebet renew rivalry after last year’s tough battle that saw the latter emerge champion at last year’s edition and it would be a sweet revenge affair if the former takes the crown.

However, owing to Chebet’s form this season, she will be hoping to continue her unstoppable form. The reigning world 5000m bronze medallist broke the 10,000m world record at the Prefontaine Classic at the start of the season before heading to the Paris Olympic Games where she emerged as the golden girl.

Chebet claimed top honours in the women’s 5000m and 10,000m, achieving a historic feat before running the fastest time in the 5000m this season at the Diamond League Meeting in Zurich.

She was not done writing history as she proceeded to the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels where she rounded up her track season with a win in the 5000m. Chebet will be unbeatable in Barcelona.

In the men’s race, Thierry Ndikumwenayo will be looking to do the usual. He has accomplished a lot in the road races and he is currently the Spanish 5K record holder with a time of 13:17.

He will be hoping to go for the world best of 12:49 set by Berihu Aregawi in 2021 on the same course and it will be double honours if he gets the record and wins the race.

The race organisers announced that approximately 60 elite participants from about 20 different countries will be in action in the 5km race.
