The World U20 Championships are always considered nurturing grounds for talents in the hope that they will continue replicating their rise with more success at senior levels.
While this is not always the case, the 2024 Paris Olympics witnessed high-profile wins for athletes that were glorious in the U20 championships previously.
The world U20 championships are for athletes who are between 16 and 19 years old as of December 31. Pulse Sports takes a look at past U20 winners that silenced doubters after cruising to the podium in the French capital with their gold-medal winning exploits.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi - he went from rising star to Olympic champion. The now 20-year-old burst onto the international scene when he ran 1:43.76 to claim victory at the 2021 world U20 championships in Nairobi, in his 800m specialty. Wanyonyi won the Olympic gold medal in 1:41.19, edging Canada’s Marco Arop by just 0.01, on August 10.
Beatrice Chebet - In June 2018, at the age of 18, Chebet won the Kenyan Under-20 5000m. A month later in Tampere, she became the first Kenyan woman and the first non-Ethiopian since 2006 to win the 5000m title at the world U20 championships in Athletics. Chebet, who is the world record holder in the 10,000m, was a double medalist in Paris in 5000m and 10,000m races, becoming the third woman in history to win both events at the same Olympic games.
