'After that race, I didn't sleep'- American icon reflects on Usain Bolt's record-breaking 100m run in 2009
The triple world champion recounts how he was shocked and couldn’t sleep the night Usain Bolt broke the 100m world record at the 2009 World Championships.
Ferdinand Omanyala pointed out that he would be appreciative if his fans came out in large numbers to hold his hand and defend him just like they do with Arsenal, given he is one of the staunchest fans of the club.
“I want to tell my fans to just be like Arsenal fans because Arsenal is always beaten sometimes and now we are number three but we are still there. The same thing, I’d want them to back me up because we still have so many years to go and we are still pushing, fighting and inspiring generations so thanks to everyone who always supports me,” said Omanyala.
The Commonwealth Games champion extended a hand of gratitude to his fans who have always supported him through difficult times, saying they are the reason he keeps pushing and putting in the work.
This season, Ferdinand Omanyala has had a series of wins but also experienced some losses like finishing fifth at the Kip Keino Classic and missing out of the men’s 100m final at the Paris Olympic Games. However, he finished second and third respectively at the Prefontaine Classic and Racers Grand Prix, racing against a stacked field.
Omanyala also claimed top honours at the FBK Games in Hengelo and completed his season as the second fastest man in the world after clocking 9.79 seconds to win the men’s 100m final at the Kenyan Olympic trials.
“Thanks to my fans…everything you have done has pushed me to greatness this season, the motivation I've been getting, those one or two comments that were coming through in my inbox and my comment section, I appreciate that a lot. That has been pushing me to become someone better and know that there is someone somewhere looking up to me and saying that I’m doing my best,” he added.
