AK Mountain Running coordinator has emphasised the Barng’etuny Mountain Run's critical role in selecting Kenya’s team for global championships.

Athletics Kenya (AK) is leaving no stone unturned in its preparations for the highly anticipated Barng’etuny Mountain Run scheduled to take place on January 18 in Nandi County.

The event, part of the Magical Kenya Mountain and Trail Series, is set to attract top mountain runners from across the country as the federation seeks to blend sports excellence with Kenya’s breathtaking natural landscapes.

The Barng’etuny Mountain Run has become a cornerstone of AK’s calendar, serving as a critical platform for talent identification and team selection.

This year’s event carries added significance as it will be used to select a provisional team for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships, slated to take place in Canfranc-Pirineos, Spain, from September 25 to 28, 2025.

Peter Angwenyi, AK’s Mountain Running coordinator, underscored the importance of the run in identifying the next crop of elite athletes.

“The first two athletes to cross the finishing line in the senior men and women races during the event will be in our provisional team for the world championships,” he said in an interview with The Star.

“We intend to field two teams for the classic and up-down races,” Angwenyi added that the remaining athletes will be picked based on their world rankings, ensuring a competitive Kenyan squad in Spain.

The Barng’etuny Mountain Run has grown in stature, attracting both seasoned and emerging talents.

This year, elite runners like Patrick Kipng’eno and Josephat Kiprotich in the men’s category, and Joyce Njeru and Philaries Kipsang in the women’s, are among the favorites.

“We expect a huge turnout of elite and upcoming athletes in Tinderet,” Angwenyi said.

The event also serves as a powerful vehicle for community development and tourism promotion.

AK officials, in collaboration with the Kenya Tourism Board, have worked to ensure the race not only showcases athletic talent but also highlights Kenya’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.

According to Angwenyi, this year’s course remains unchanged except for an adjusted finishing line designed to offer spectators an unparalleled view of the athletes and Lake Victoria.

“We have only changed the finishing area to allow spectators to watch the athletes as they race to the finishing line as well as a good view of Lake Victoria,” he said.

The Barng’etuny Mountain Run patron, Tinderet Julius Melly, echoed these sentiments, emphasising the event’s broader impact on communities and the nation.

“The event is not only a platform to celebrate Kenya’s rich heritage and breathtaking landscapes but also an opportunity to empower our communities through sports and tourism,” he said.

Melly added that the run fosters economic growth, attracts global attention to the Rift Valley, and unites people in celebrating Kenya’s diverse culture.

This year’s Magical Kenya Mountain and Trail Series promises to be more ambitious than ever, with the series set to traverse several iconic Kenyan destinations.

After the Barng’etuny Run, the series will move to Nyamira in May, Mt. Kenya in June, the Aberdares in August, Mt. Longonot in November  and conclude in Mt. Elgon in December.
