Athletics Kenya Unveil Formidable Team for World Athletics Relays

Athletics Kenya has named a strong, experience-blended squad led by stars like Ferdinand Omanyala and Mary Moraa to represent the country at the World Relays in China.

Athletics Kenya has unveiled a formidable team for the World Relays after the conclusion of the trials held at the Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday, April 12.

The World Athletics Relays are scheduled for May 10 and 11 in Guangzhou, China and Athletics Kenya is hopeful that the team selected will bring glory back home.

Men’s 4x100m

Ferdinand Omanyala

Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala and his younger brother Isaac Omurwa lead the selection for the men’s 4x100m.

At the trials, Meshack Babu crossed the finish line first to win the men’s 100m final in a time of 10.39 seconds, automatically securing a place in the team.

Moses Onyango Wasike and Isaac Omurwa came in second and third in respective times of 10.47 and 10.49 seconds to also make the cut.

Ferdinand Omanyala and Mark Otieno have also been included in the team, despite their absence since they were competing at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix happening on Saturday too.

In his 100m race, Ferdinand Omanyala finished second in 10.00 seconds behind Akani Simbine as Mark Otieno slightly missed out on the podium with a fourth-place finish. With such a strong team of young and experienced sprinters, Kenya will be looking to shine in the men’s 4x100m.

Men’s 4x400m

Wiseman Were

Olympian Wiseman Were and Boniface Mweresa, an experienced 400m runner will lead the men’s 4x400m relay team in their hunt for global stardom.

Kelvin Kipkorir who won the race at the trials in a personal best time of 45.24 seconds has also been included in the squad. Second and third-place finishers Brian Tinega (45.74) and Allan Kipyego (46.11) will also be making their Team Kenya debuts.

Kelvin Tonui and David Sanayek, who finished fourth and sixth respectively have also been named in the squad. Wiseman Were was not in action at the trials since he was competing at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix where he finished second in the 400m hurdles.

Women’s 4x400m

Mary Moraa

The women’s 4x400m will be represented by Mercy Oketch who finished second behind Uganda’s Shida Leni at the trials. Oketch clocked a stunning 51.64 seconds ahead of Mercy Chebet who rounded up the podium.

Joining Mercy Oketch and Chebet will be Esther Mbagari and Lanoline Owino who finished fourth and fifth respectively. Gladys Mumbe and Hellen Syombua who were also at the trials have made the team.

Reigning world champion Mary Moraa, fresh from competing at the Grand Slam Track, now has another assignment under her belt as she has also been selected to the 4x400m squad.

The officials travelling with the athletes include Kennedy Tanui, Catherin Kagwiria, Stanley Towett, Thomas Musembi, Simon Riga and Edwin Kiptoo.
