Athletics Kenya has submitted a bid to host the World Athletics Championships in the near future, having seen their plans for the 2025 edition fall apart.

Kenya has not given up on its bid to host the World Athletics Championships, having missed out on the 2025 edition that will be hosted by Tokyo, Japan.

The country had expressed a desire to host the global championships owing to its status as an athletics nation but saw their plans fall apart due to the lack of facilities that meet World Athletics standards.

Now, the country has submitted its bid for the 2029 edition of the World Athletics Championships and hopes to have all the necessary facilities in place by then to stage the global event.

“Our application was accepted and added to the list of countries bidding,” said Athletics Kenya boss Jack Tuwei, adding that former Boston Marathon champion Ibrahim Kipkemboi Hussein will lead the team handling the country’s bid.

“We didn’t give up and decided to try again. We made a special request to the government, and I thank the CS for facilitating the application.”

Stadia is among the facilities that let Kenya down and it is a problem yet to be addressed but there is optimism over the ongoing renovation of Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums, whose completion is projected to be at the end of this year.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is confident that Kenya’s bid will be successful this time, pinning his hopes on the new-look Nyayo and Kasarani once they are ready.

“We are determined to build modern facilities, we are competent and capable, as we have the resources to make that happen and work,” said Murkomen, as quoted by Nation.

Africa is yet to host the World Athletics Championships since its inaugural edition in Malmo, Sweden in 1976, and Kenya is hoping to become the first country to get the honours.

The country enjoys goodwill from the global athletics governing body but that alone is not enough as it must put its house in order first.
