Michael Johnson has remained focused on the Grand Slam Track League's goal amid criticism from Olympic champion Tara Davis-Woodhall and husband Hunter Woodhall.

American sprint legend Michael Johnson can’t wait for the first edition of the Grand Slam Track League set to debut in April 2025 in Kingston, Jamaica.

The league announced the full list of the 48 racers with the last batch of athletes announced on Thursday, December 19.

Great Britain’s fastest man Zharnel Hughes and Olympic bronze medallist Brittany Brown headline the list of the final wave of racers.

Following the announcement, the four-time Olympic champion was over the moon about the quality of athletes who had been signed.

Johnson disclosed that with that, they aim to give the athletes the exposure and realistic prize money among other things that they have always been complaining about.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this group! Athletes have complained about lack of compensation, guarantees, and big stage. We gave them exactly what they wanted and these 48 said 'I’M IN, LET’s GO!' And I appreciate them for that,” he shared on his X handle.

Michael Johnson further revealed that they still have to announce the complete list of challengers and then all will be set.

“Louder for the people hyper-focused on who hasn’t signed on as a Racer! We’re not finished,” Johnson added.

He has recently faced a lot of criticism following his recent comments about why he believes he can save track and not track and field.

Olympic champion Tara Davis-Woodhall and Hunter Woodhall shared a post on their social media criticising his comments and asking him to stop ruining the sport.

“I love this sport. But I have had time to reconcile the fact that if we continue to just do the same thing, tell people that ‘you should love this’ or ‘you should understand this’ that doesn’t work,” Johnson said in an interview with BBC Sport.

“Grand Slam Track is track, that is what we’re doing. I am going to save what I think I can save; I think I can save track, I don’t think I can save track and field.”

An angry Tara Davis-Woodhall slammed the American legend for the comments, insisting that the sport does not need saving at all.

“Michael, you are ruining the sport if you are trying to save just track…it’s track and field for a reason,” Tara Davis-Woodhall said.

“The field events actually do have a lot of impact on the sport and we don’t need your saving and you are long gone, your time has passed and if you wanted to change the sport, you would have done it a long time ago, instead you were skipping out of the sport. The sport does not need you.”

On his part, Hunter Woodhall advised Johnson to stop meddling with the sport and making selfish decisions to gain traction.

“Stop coming back and just being so self-important and just saying wild things to just get a rise out of people because no one cares, to be honest, at all and we are doing just fine. I don’t know if you saw the Olympics, they were great,” Hunter said.
