Social media voting for World Athletics Athlete of the Year Awards nominees will close on Sunday and here is how you can support Faith Kipyegon, Beatrice Chebet and Emmanuel Wanyonyi.

The public voting exercise for the nominees of the World Athletics Athlete of the Year Award will close on Sunday October 27 with three Kenyans in the running for the prestigious recognition.

Faith Kipyegon, Beatrice Chebet and Emmanuel Wanyonyi are among the nominees for the World Athlete of the Year track in both female and male categories and Kenyans on social media can play a big part in helping them win, given the public vote will count for 25 percent of the final result.

The system for selecting the award winners has changed for 2024. Like last year, there will be three separate awards for men and three for women, recognising the athletes of the year for track, field and out-of-stadium events. There will also be men’s and women’s awards for an overall World Athlete of the Year.

Olympics champions Kipyegon, Chebet, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Gabby Thomas, Julien Alfred and Marileidy Paulino are the nominees for the women’s track award while the men’s has Wanyonyi, Rai Benjamin, Grant Holloway, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Noah Lyles and Letsile Tebogo.

How it works

The voting will therefore determine the two finalists in each category.

The World Athletics Council’s vote will count for 50 percent of the result, while the World Athletics Family’s votes and social media votes will each count for 25 percent of the result.

The World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family will cast their votes by email, while the social vote is open until Sunday October 27 on World Athletics’ social media accounts. Individual graphics for each nominee are posted and a 'like' on Facebook and Instagram or a retweet on X will count as one vote.

Currently, the three Kenyans are in a race against time, as they trail most of their rivals by a significant margin in the social media votes, and Kenyans can help boost their numbers before the exercise comes to an end.

How to vote for Kipyegon, Chebet & Wanyonyi?

To cast your social media vote for the Kenyan trio, go to the World Athletics’ Facebook, Instagram and X accounts and like (on Facebook and Instagram) or retweet (on X) under the posted graphics for each of them before it closes on Sunday October 27.

What else will determine the winner?

Once the finalists have been established, a fan vote will open – for all registered users of Inside Track – to help determine the overall World Athletes of the Year.
