Andrew Alamisi explains how watching women's race motivated him to victory at World Under-20 Championships

Andrew Alamisi has explained the motivation behind his effort to win Kenya's first gold medal in the men's 5000m at the World Under-20 Championships in Peru, Lima.

Newly crowned world under-20 champion Andrew Kiptoo Alamisi has disclosed what motivated him to fight hard for a win in the men’s 5000m at the ongoing World Under 20 championships in Lima, Peru.

The Africa Under-18 1500m silver medalist noted that after seeing the women struggle to earn a medal in the 5000m which preceded the men’s race, he knew he had his work cut out to bring glory to Kenya.

The first Kenyan to cross the finish line in the women’s 5000m race was Mercy Chepkemoi who finished fourth in a personal best time of 15:33.29. The race was won by Medina Eisa of Ethiopia who clocked a stunning course record time of 14:39.71.

Going into the men’s race, Alamisi dug deep for a win, clocking a stunning 13:41.14 to cross the finish line ahead of Ethiopia’s Abdisa Fayisa who clocked 13:41.56. Keneth Kiprop rounded up the podium in a time of 13:41.73.

“When I saw our ladies failing to win any medal, I had to come in and save the country. I had to do something great that I achieved. Right now, I have one year in junior, coming to an end next year and I will be competing in the 10,000m in future,” he said in a post-race interview.

He added that another source of motivation of his was the training he had done and he wanted to make Kenya proud.

Alamisi explained that being at the camp, training has been effective and he managed to benefit from several coaches who imparted him with tons of skills.

“I really wanted to win this gold because of my preparations and my country. I want to thank God for helping me win my first gold. My coaches from the camp to this place have been of great impact and the only thing I could do was to win gold,” he said.
