The 2004 Olympic champion highlighted two key reasons that make Letsile Tebogo a unique sprinter of this generation and why he will dominate for a long time.

American sprint icon Justin Gatlin has explained two key things that make Letsile Tebogo a one of a kind sprinter of this generation.

Speaking in his Ready Set Go podcast, Gatlin pointed out that Tebogo is one of those sprinters who even after Olympic glory or World Championship glory, they always show up and continue their winning ways. He disclosed that the reigning Olympic 200m champion is more focused on creating a legacy than just winning medals.

The 2004 Olympic 100m champion added that Tebogo started his winning ways while competing in the junior category and he would always mimic Usain Bolt’s stunts while racing, something that made Gatlin know he was destined for greatness.

The two-time Olympic silver medallist added that after losing his mum, Seratiwa Tebogo, the world 100m silver medallist could have easily given up on his season and went back home until next season but he chose to show up and compete and win races.

“There are two things that are defining factors for me…When he was a real junior athlete, age-wise, he is still a junior athlete, but when he was a real junior, he had this thing that had to do with a top Jamaican sprinter and he went out in the finals and hit that infamous like ‘Yeah, that’s what it is.’,” Gatlin said.

“That tells me right there that when it comes to conflict, he is the kind of person to go out there and resolve it and he will go out there and race you for it. He is hungry for it and is not going to back down. The second thing was when he lost his mom, that was a defining moment for me because like, he could have packed up and gone home and nobody would have asked him a question and they would be like, ‘See you in 2024, rest up and do your thing.’

“But the fact of, he doubled down, came back, ran the 100m, came back in the 200m, won the gold medal, split 43 in the 4x400m, then came back and was dropping 19s after the Olympics, to me, that’s a dominant textbook athlete. Whatever he lines up in, be aware, be scared,” he added.

After the Paris Olympic Games dominant exploits, Tebogo went on to claim the win at the Diamond League Meeting in Lausanne before silencing his rivals at the Diamond League Meeting in Silesia.

The 21-year-old proceeded to claim top honours at the Meeting in Rome and is fresh from winning the Meeting in Zurich. He now shifts focus to the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels.
