Tanzania's Alphonce Simbu showcased remarkable endurance securing a podium finish and interrupting Kenya's dominance at the Daegu Marathon.

Kenya's Stephen Kiprop emerged victorious at the 2024 Daegu Marathon in South Korea clocking an impressive time of 2:07:04 leading a Kenyan charge that saw his compatriot Kennedy Kimutai secure second place with a time of 2:07:40.

The event, held on a crisp Sunday morning underscored the East African nation's prowess in long-distance running with a 1-2 finish that kept the Kenyan flag flying high.

Tanzania's Alphonce Simbu broke into the top three, finishing in 2:07:55, narrowly edging out Kenya's Ben Chelimo, who crossed the line in fourth place at 2:08:04.

Kenyan-born Turkish athlete Kaan Kigen Ozbilen rounded out the top five with a time of 2:08:19, showcasing the global nature of the competition.

The marathon kicked off at a blistering pace, with the lead pack completing the first 5km in 14:58.

This group, which included Kiprop, Kimutai, Chelimo, and Simbu, maintained a swift pace through 15km, clocked at 44:31, signaling their intent to challenge the course record of 2:05:33.

Although the pace slightly decreased as the race progressed, the leading group's determination did not waver.

As the marathon unfolded, the contenders began to thin out, with Chelimo being the first among the leaders to lose contact.

The pivotal moment came shortly after the 30km mark, reached in 1:29:56, where the lead group began to fragment, leaving Kiprop and Kimutai in a head-to-head race with Simbu trailing behind.

The final stages of the marathon saw Kiprop and Kimutai extend their lead, with Kiprop eventually pulling away to secure a decisive victory.

Simbu's pace dropped in the closing kilometers, allowing Kimutai to clinch second place comfortably, while Chelimo secured a commendable fourth place finish.
