Athletics Kenya is in a dilemma ahead of the World Cross-country Championships since top athletes are yet to report to the training camp that started on Sunday and are yet to communicate.

Top athletes are reportedly missing from Team Kenya’s training camp ahead of the World Cross-country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia slated for Saturday, March 30.

As per Nation Sport, defending champion Beatrice Chebet, world 10km record holder Agnes Ngetich and Sirikwa Classic Cross-country champion Emmaculate Anyango, and World Road Running Championships 5km silver medallist Lilian Kasait are some of the top athletes yet to report to the camp in Ngong, Kajiado.

This is puzzling since the athletes are some of the medal hopefuls owing to the tough competition that awaits, especially in the senior women’s race.

World 800m silver medallist Emmanuel Wanyonyi is also yet to report to the camp but he communicated that he would be doing some specialised training before joining the rest of the athletes a few days before their departure.

Team Kenya head coach Julius Kirwa expressed his worry, noting that the athletes’ lines are not going through, leaving them in a state of dilemma. He has already written a report to Athletics Kenya and he awaits their response on the way forward.

“I have sent a report to Athletics Kenya concerning their absence and should expect action soon. Their lines are not going through…the worst thing is that they have not bothered to communicate to explain their situation.

“They should have told us in advance not to include them at the trials so as to avoid these hide-and-seek games,” Kirwa told Nation Sport.

Meanwhile, multiple World Cross-country champion Geoffrey Kamworor has also withdrawn from the event stating that he will focus on training for the London Marathon. He has since been replaced by Nicholas Kimeli who will do all it takes to bridge the gap.
