Akani Simbine has explained what his second-place finish behind Noah Lyles at the London Diamond League Meeting means to him with less than two weeks to the Olympic Games.

South African sprinting ace Akani Simbine believes the London Diamond League second-place finish is motivation enough ahead of the Paris Olympic Games.

Simbine finished second in 9.86 behind Noah Lyles who clocked a personal best time of 9.81 to win the race. Botswanan wunderkind Letsile Tebogo finished third in a stunning personal best time of 9.88.

The former African record holder now heads to Paris knowing that he is in the right shape for a top finish. He is also aware of what he needs to work on with less than two weeks to the Olympic Games.

“It feels good and I'm happy with my race. This is a huge confidence ahead of the Games, knowing the shape I'm in right now and knowing what we need to work on just in the last week. I'm feeling good going into the Games and I'm really excited for it,” Simbine said after the race.

The 30-year-old added that running at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Stadium in London is always fun since he has mastered the art of running faster times.

He explained that the crowds are always ready to cheer them on and he was satisfied with the season's best time he posted.

“I'm happy with today's performance, I've run a season's best. I think we've got the time right now and so it's just time to fix up a little bit of the race ahead of the Olympics,” Simbine said.

“The crowd is always amazing in London. I love coming to London and racing in London. I always run fast in London and it's just an awesome place,” he added.

Simbine has enjoyed a great 2024 season so far, winning the South African Championships before extending the winning streak to the Diamond League Meetings in Xiamen and Shanghai.

Simbine then competed at the Gyulai István Memorial, finishing third behind Tebogo and Kishane Thompson before his second place finish at the London Diamond League.
