South African sprinter Akani Simbine celebrated twice last weekend when he ran a world leading time a day before the team he supporters ended their long wait for a cup final.
South African sprinter Akani Simbine had double delight at the weekend when he won on the track and also watched his favourite team triumph on the pitch.
Simbine clocked the fastest time in the world this year at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix to announce his intentions of going for major honours this season.
The 31-year-old shrugged off the challenge of Ferdinand Omanyala to win the race in 9.90 seconds at the National Stadium in Gaborone, lowering the 9.99 seconds that had been clocked by compatriot Bayanda Walaza, in Pretoria in March.

That happened on Saturday and on Sunday, the sprinter watched with delight as the team he supports, Kaizer Chiefs stunned Mamelodi Sundowns to reach a first cup final since 2019 in South Africa.

Akani Simbine Obliterates Bayanda Walaza’s World Lead As He Beats Improving Ferdinand Omanyala In Botswana
South Africa’s Akani Simbine clocked a world leading time to edge out Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix.
Chiefs, South Africa’s most popular team, had their backs against the wall as they faced Sundowns, the country’s best team, in the Nedbank Cup semi-final and having lost three times already to the Brazilians this season, few gave them a chance of winning.
It started according to script for Sundowns who took the lead via a freekick from Teboho Mokoena but Chiefs upped their game in the second half with Wandie Duba equalising before Ashley Du Preez won it two minutes from time, as Chiefs kept alive their hopes of winning a first trophy since 2015 to the delight of their supporters, who include Simbine.
“@KaizerChiefs I’m soooooo happy right now!!!! Thanks for ending my weekend on a high,” Simbine posted on X with the Glamour Boys responding: “Congratulations on your 9.90 win Khosi.”
Chiefs have been struggling in the South African league as they are stuck in eighth position and had not won any of their four games prior to the Nedbank Cup semi-final victory.
