South Africa’s Akani Simbine clocked a world leading time to edge out Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix.
South Africa’s Akani Simbine became the second man to post a sub-10 in 100m this season when he beat Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala to win the Botswana Golden Grand Prix on Saturday.
Africa’s two fastest men lined up at the National Stadium in Gaborone on a sunny Saturday afternoon in the latest of their epic battles and when the gun went off, Omanyala got off the blocks quicker.
However, Simbine gathered enough speed to catch up with his continental rival by the 50m point before he went past him to win the race in a world leading time of 9.90 seconds, a great statement of intent for the 2025 season.

Altay Bayindir Reacts After Andre Onana Replacement Ends in Blunder on Premier League Debut
Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has opened up following his awful Premier League debut as his bid to replace Andre Onana long-term did not go to plan.
Omanyala clocked 10.00 seconds for second place while Retshidisitswe Mlenga, also from South Africa, finished third in 10.15 seconds.
Kenya’s Mark Otieno was fourth in 10.22 seconds as he continues his journey back to his best form.
Simbine’s time was 0.9 seconds better than that posted by his South African compatriot Bayanda Walaza in Pretoria in March when he clocked 9.99 seconds, which had been the world leading time before Saturday’s event.
The South African continues to show good early season form with his win in Botswana coming over two weeks since he claimed bronze at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China last month.
