While his talent is unmatched, Akani Simbine has called upon fans to give Gout Gout the time he needs to mature since he is just 17.

Africa’s second-fastest man believes that at his young age, Gout Gout should be allowed to relax and enjoy the sport and when the right time comes when he is mature enough to handle the pressure, the comparisons can come.

He explained that Gout Gout has a long way to go and the comparisons might just be the beginning of a troubling career.

“Gout is still a young kid…I think we shouldn’t put so much pressure on him. I feel like everyone is just saying that he is the next thing forgetting that he is still a teenage boy doing a sport that he loves,” Akani Simbine said in an interview after his win at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix.

“Let’s not take the love and fun of it away from him. He is talented but still has a long way to go and he still has time to prove himself.”

Competing in his first 100m race of the season, the world indoor bronze medallist explained that it was all about execution as he had agreed with his coach and was glad to have achieved his goal.

Akani Simbine clocked a stunning world-leading time of 9.90 seconds ahead of Ferdinand Omanyala who came in second in 10.00 seconds. South Africa’s Retshidisitswe Mlenga rounded up the podium in 10.15 seconds.

“The race was clean, I just wanted to come out here and make sure I put together a good race. This was my first 100m of the year so it was uncharted territory of the year so I’m happy with the race,” he said.

“I’m happy to come out here in Botswana and just be here, a beautiful place, and a beautiful crowd.”

The Olympic silver medallist further pointed out that as a sprinter, he spends a lot of time away from his family, one of the things that he struggles with to date.

Akani Simbine pointed out that, however, he gets a lot of satisfaction when he represents them well on the global stage, by winning races.

“Just preparing for the race, we sacrifice so much family time to be here and to be ready to be racing. I’m away from my family and kids but for me, I must represent them,” Akani Simbine revealed.

“I have a family at home and they love and support me and I’m here to do a job and represent them and represent everybody who supports me as well.”

Akani Simbine is on a different mission this season, and after winning the World Indoor bronze medal in the 60m and setting a world lead in Botswana, he is clearly charged up ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan in September.
