Kenya’s steeplechase trio of Amos Serem, Abraham Kibiwott and Simon Koech will hope to make it to the final at the Paris Olympics as the country looks to reclaim its lost crown.
Kenya’s quest to reclaim its lost steeplechase glory will begin on Monday night when Amos Serem, Abraham Kibiwott and Simon Koech take to the track.
The men’s 3,000m steeplechase first round will begin at 7.04pm Kenyan time with Serem in a tough group that includes defending champion Sofiane El Bakkali of Morocco.
Kibiwott will then hit the track in the second heat before Koech competes in the third, looking to ensure all Kenyans are in the final.

Wiseman Were has advanced to the 400m Hurdles semis as one of the fastest qualifiers after his fifth-place finish in the first round.
Steeplechase was considered a Kenyan race as no other country had claimed Olympics gold over the distance since 1968 but things changed at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games when El Bakkali won the title.
That happened after Kenya had also lost it at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships and pressure is on the trio to reclaim the crown.
Of the three, Kibiwott is the most experienced runner as this will be his second Olympics following a 10th place finish in Tokyo.

Paris 2024 Olympics: Heavily strapped Zablon Ekwam pulls up injured midway into 400m heat
Zablon Ekwam was eliminated from the Paris Olympics after injuring his hamstring during the qualifying heats.
He won bronze at last year’s World Championships and will hope to improve on it at the Paris Olympics.
Meanwhile, Serem won silver at the African Games early this year as Koech claimed bronze and with both aged 21, they lack the experience needed to floor El Bakkali.
