The retired sprint sensation jumped to Michael Johnson's defence following backlash from Tara Davis-Woodhall and her husband Hunter Woodhall.

Retired Bahamian sprinter Rodney Green has defended Michael Johnson following the harsh criticism from Tara Davis-Woodhall and her husband Hunter Woodhall.

Speaking on the Ready Set Go podcast, Rodney Green explained that the comments from the Woodhalls came from a point of emotions and they never got the time to think through it before sharing it on social media.

He added that they might have been irked by Michael Johnson’s comments about saving track only but believes that there is a better way they could have handled the situation. Green further pointed out that the information from the couple has not been received well by several people since it came off as disrespectful to the four-time Olympic champion.

Green stated that Johnson has been a very vital part of track and field and the sport needs him, discrediting Tara Davis-Woodhall’s comments. The retired sprinter added that he would only fix what he could and field legends should come out and work on the other aspect.

“They didn’t like it but what they said, people didn’t like it either, they didn’t like the disrespect of a gold medallist. We’ve had people dive into their lives a little bit…I mean, I get it, I know they are saying that they are riding on their high horse now and feel like they could say whatever,” Green said.

“I feel like they were more so speaking from defence and they saw it and felt like they should speak immediately. They didn’t think about rethinking the issue since they are very visible right now. I think it was just a hasty comment that they said with a lot of emotions behind it. They saw Michael Johnson’s statement and felt the need to comment immediately and didn’t seek counsel from anybody.”

Meanwhile, in a past interview, Michael Johnson revealed reasons behind his desire to only revolutionise track and not track and field as a whole. Having been a track athlete, he explained that he knows what goes on in that area and would be glad to save it.

He expressed love for both track and field but remained adamant that the Grad Slam Track League will only focus on track events, something that irked Tara Davis-Woodhall and Hunter Woodhall.

“I love this sport. But I have had time to reconcile the fact that if we continue to just do the same thing, tell people that ‘you should love this’ or ‘you should understand this’ that doesn’t work,” Michael Johnson said.

“Grand Slam Track is track, that is what we’re doing. I am going to save what I think I can save; I think I can save track, I don’t think I can save track and field.”

Clapping back at the American sprint legend, Tara Davis-Woodhall revealed that secluding the events will destroy the sport more. She told Michael Johnson to venture into other things since the sport ‘does not need him.’

“I’m thankful for everything and thankful for my sport. About my sport, it does not need saving at all. It’s actually, Michael, you are ruining the sport if you are trying to save just track…it’s track and field for a reason,” Tara Davis-Woodhall said.

“The field events actually do have a lot of impact on the sport and we don’t need your saving and you are long gone, your time has passed and if you wanted to change the sport, you would have done it a long time ago, instead you were skipping out of the sport. The sport does not need you.”

On his part, Hunter Woodhall said: “Stop coming back and just being so self-important and just saying wild things to just get a rise out of people because no one cares, to be honest, at all and we are doing just fine. I don’t know if you saw the Olympics, they were great.”
