Kelvin Kiptum clocked 2:00:35 to completely obliterate Eliud Kipchoge's world record time of 2:01:09.
Reigning London Marathon champion Kelvin Kiptum was in a class of his own as he completely obliterated Eliud Kipchoge's world record time of 2:01:09 at the Chicago Marathon.
The 23-year-old clocked 2:00:35 to cut the tape first ahead of the defending champion Benson Kipruto who clocked 2:04:02 to finish second. Bashir Abdi of Belgium completed the podium after clocking 2:04:32. With his time, Kiptum lowered Kipchoge's time by 34 seconds.
Kiptum was only competing in his third marathon after making his debut at the Valencia Marathon last year where he ran the fastest marathon debut ever. Earlier this year, he competed at the London Marathon where he won the race in the second-fastest time and now he has the world record to his name.

The men’s race had attracted one of the deepest fields ever assembled in the streets of Chicago with 31 men taking to the start line including Kiptum and defending champion Kipruto.
As the pack passed the 10km mark, everyone looked comfortable as Kiptum led the pack, crossing the mark in 28:42. He was closely followed by Daniel Mateiko and Dawit Wolde who were running in second and third place respectively.

Kiptum maintained his lead at the 15km mark, with Mateiko as his only challenger at the time. Kipruto was chasing the duo, hoping to close the gap. Wolde had been pushed to the back and was now running in sixth place.
By the time they reached the 20km mark, Kiptum still appeared poised, running comfortably and enjoying the company of his compatriot Mateiko, who stuck by his side.
Dawit had now come up and was running in third place, chasing the Kenyan duo as Kipruto was running in fourth place.
Passing the 21km mark, Kiptum was still one course with his compatriot pressing on him. Kipruto was slowly fading backward and was now running in fifth place.
As they passed the 25km mark, Kiptum was still running in the lead as his compatriot, who also debuted held onto him. He passed the mark in 1:12:04 as Mateiko passed in 1:12:05.
Passing the 30km mark, the reigning Valencia Marathon champion was still leading Mateiko and the race was now a battle between the two. The defending champion was running in seventh place as Ethiopians overtook him during the race.

At the 33km mark, Kiptum started pulling away from debutant Mateiko who was also trying to keep up with him but Kiptum was now sprinting.
Running solely, Kiptum passed the 35km in 1:40:22 looking very comfortable and ready to go for Eliud Kipchoge’s world record. Mateiko, now running in second place, passed the mark in 1:41:11.
He also passed the 40km mark in style and it was visible that he was going for the world record. With the finish line in sight, Kiptum looked comfortable racing to the finish line and cut the tape in 2:00:35.
