American music superstars are engaged in a feud after artists set to perform at the Super Bowl, the NFL final, were chosen with claims of ‘hatred & favoritism’ made.

American music superstars continue to clash over the selection of rapper Kendrick Lamar as the headline act of the Super Bowl halftime show.

The NFL, and organisers of the show, settled on Lamar for the Super Bowl halftime show set to take place on February 9 in New Orleans, Louisiana, but the decision has sparked claims of “hatred and favoritism” among other artists, particularly with the omission of rapper Lil Wayne from the line-up.

The bone of contention is that New Orleans-born Lil Wayne should have been the main man and not Compton-born Lamar since the Super Bowl, the NFL final, will be held in his home city and state.

Rapper Nicki Minaj is the latest to weigh in on the matter, posting a series of X-rated tweets in support of Lil Wayne, who gave her, her music breakthrough.

"One n**** took a knee. The other n**** took the bag. He gon get you 'n*****s' in line every f*cking time," drawing a parallel between Colin Kaepernick and Jay-Z’s responses to the NFL protest movements.

Why the beef?

Minaj was hitting out at rapper Jay-Z for supporting the decision to choose Lamar.

“Kendrick Lamar is truly a once-in-a-generation artist and performer,” JAY-Z said of the 17-time Grammy Award winner, as reported by Vibe.

“His deep love for Hip-Hop and culture informs his artistic vision. He has an unparalleled ability to define and influence culture globally. Kendrick’s work transcends music, and his impact will be felt for years to come.”

What is Super Bowl and why the controversy?

The Super Bowl halftime show, which features some of the biggest stars in music, has grown to be almost as significant and hotly-anticipated as the game itself.

The 2024 Super Bowl halftime show, which starred Usher, attracted an audience of over 129 million viewers.

It is held at halftime during the NFL final, popularly known as Super Bowl, and is considered the most watched event in America, hence the huge interest from artists, broadcasters and sponsors.

Artists chosen to perform at the Super Bowl final do not just boost their profile but also use the popularity of the event to push their music and products which normally record massive sales following their performance.
